When working a shift job your mind and body are subjected to various strains and stresses that People working normal hours of the day could not begin to understand. Many of them think they have an idea how it feels but they have no clue. Theses stresses are not the only hindrances we have to deal with. But they are compounded onto the other stresses that are normally associated with the world of work. So our stresses are double fold. And we have to deal with it all the same. What a bummer.
Let me give you an example. I am an electrical technician, which means if something electrical breaks down at work, I have to fix it. Let’s say that certain component is in a hard to reach area which is very hot and humid and I have to complete the task lying on my back because of the location. (I am already exhausted just playing out the scenario in my head).
During the day I will have to deal with the heat, which means I will be sweating by the bucket loads. I will have to deal with the confined area and difficulty to maneuver. Those are stresses that I have to deal with when doing this particular job no matter what time of today it is. On the night shift however, while doing the same job, I have to deal with these same stresses, plus insufficient lighting which just make the task more difficult. It’s also 1:00 in the morning so it’s a little harder to concentrate. Again the difficulty just went up.
You see where I am going with this. I don’t have to deal with poor lighting and sleepiness during the day. Those are added stresses.
This applies to you in whatever field you’re in. You do not only have deadlines to meet, but you have deadlines to meet and you’re hungry because there are no restaurants open at 4:00am.
You don’t only have to deal with a disgruntled customer but you have to deal with a disgruntled customer while yawning till kingdom comes, after all its 6:30am and your shift is almost up.
It is not easy on the shift grind and there are many ways to help you stay sane and relieve some of that shift work stress. Do activities you enjoy in your spare time. Such as reading, crafts, swimming. Physical activity like I always say is a great stress reliever.
I don’t have to tell you what I do. I go to the gym and bench press the stress away.
